World Book Day 2011 celebrations
On March 16, U.S. Mission Uganda staff joined over 300 school children from 14 local primary and secondary schools to celebrate World Book Day 2011 at Hawa Secondary School in Wakiso district. The goal was to encourage Ugandan school children to read both in school and on their own. Sponsored by the Public Affairs Section of the U.S. Mission, the event was organized by, Restoring and Empowering Communities (REC), a local community-based organization. U.S. Mission staff including the Public Affairs Officer, Ms. Joann Lockard, read stories to the children and lead storytelling sessions with the kids. Winners received prizes for best reading, poetry, and creative writing. Each student received a book, a U.S. flag and pin. U.S. Mission staff donated over 400 books.
