Deputy Secretary of State William J. Burns led a high-level U.S. Government delegation to Uganda on January 27- 28, 2012. The Deputy Secretary’s visit was part of a broader regional trip including Ghana, Ethiopia, and South Sudan.
In Uganda, Deputy Secretary Burns’ discussions with President Museveni and members of Uganda’s civil society highlighted the strength of the U.S.-Ugandan bilateral partnership on a range of issues, including regional security, good governance, and respect for human rights. The Deputy Secretary also visited Wagagai Health Center in Entebbe. The Health Center, which is advancing integrated health service delivery, is an excellent example of private-public partnerships and illustrates one of the many successful aspects of the U.S. Global Health Initiative.
Deputy Secretary Burns saluted Uganda’s leading role in the peace process in Somalia and Sudan. He also reiterated U.S. support for the Government of Uganda's efforts to fight the Lord’s Resistance Army, as well as Uganda's commitment to the AMISOM mission in Somalia.
