Secretary of State Hillary Clinton visited Uganda on August 3 as part of an 11-day trip to Africa. In Uganda, the Secretary met with President of Uganda Yoweri Museveni, visited Kasenyi Military Base, toured Reach Out Mbuya Health Center, presented the Human Rights Defenders award to the Civil Society Coalition for Human Rights and Constitutional Law (better known as the “Coalition”), and spoke to the staff and families of  Mission Uganda.

The purpose her visit was to encourage strengthening of democratic institutions and human rights, while also reinforcing Uganda as a key U.S. partner in promoting regional security, particularly in regard to Somalia and in regional efforts to counter the Lord’s Resistance Army. She also highlighted U.S. support in the fight against HIV/AIDS.

Other countries on her itinerary included Senegal, Kenya, Malawi, South Africa, and the world’s newest nation, South Sudan.
