Embassy Kampala has received information that a demonstration is scheduled to take place on February 21, 2008. The demonstration is being organized by labor unions and worker's representatives in the Ugandan Parliament who oppose a new local service tax. Demonstrators plan to assemble at 8:00 AM in the area of Centenary Park on Jinja Road, and at 9:00 AM plan to march from Centenary Park to the Parliament Buildings via Yusuf Lule Road and Nile Avenue. Demonstrators plan to arrive at the Parliament Buildings at 11:00 AM. American citizens are urged to avoid this area during the time of the scheduled demonstration.
Spontaneous demonstrations take place in Uganda from time to time in response to world events or local developments. We remind American citizens that even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and possible escalate into violence. American citizens are therefore urged to avoid the areas of demonstrations if possible, and to exercise caution if within the vicinity of any demonstrations. American citizens should stay current with media coverage of local events and be aware of their surroundings at all times.
