Ambassador Holds Press Roundtable

The U.S. Ambassador to Uganda, Jerry P. Lanier, held his first press roundtable with Ugandan journalists on February 4th at the U.S. Mission in Kampala.  The Ambassador used this opportunity to highlight the U.S.-Ugandan partnership in general and the U.S. Mission’s support for press freedom in Uganda.

During the discussion, journalists raised key issues such as democratic development, corruption, energy issues, and U.S. assistance to Uganda.  Ambassador Lanier welcomed the journalists’ views and highlighted the U.S. Mission’s commitment to a lasting partnership with the government and people of Uganda, while focusing on the importance of a free, fair, transparent, and peaceful electoral process and good governance.   He concluded the session by saying that “Uganda is a lovely country, and I am proud to represent the United States in Kampala.”

Eight print media houses, The New Vision, Daily Monitor, Bukedde, East African Business Week, The Independent, The Weekly Message, and The Observer, sent journalists to cover the event.

As a demonstration of the U.S. Mission’s commitment to the importance of a free and independent media, this will be the first of a series of press roundtables to share information about the U.S.-Uganda partnership.
