U.S. EMBASSY WARNS OF CURRENCY SCAM

The United States Embassy in Kampala has received numerous reports of conmen attempting to pass counterfeit US currency in a practice known as a 'black money scam.'  In this scam, the victim is often paid for goods or services by a conman using black pieces of paper.

The victim is told that the papers are valid US currency that have been chemically altered and turned black as a security measure, and is directed to visit the United States Embassy to obtain a special solution that will return the currency to its legitimate state.  The Embassy has no such solution, and any attempted transaction of this nature should be considered fraudulent.

The United States Embassy encourages any Ugandan who encounters 'black money' to contact the Ugandan Police Force/Criminal Investigation Division at 041-232-359 or 0712-667704, or the Kampala Regional CID Office at 041-341-942 or 0712-667705.
